HOW PEOPLE AND GOODS MOVE ACROSS BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG
Baden-Württemberg is one of Germany’s strongest economic regions and a major centre for industry and logistics.
Located at the heart of Europe, the state is closely connected to important European road, rail and inland waterway corridors. Economic development, changing mobility needs and climate objectives call for continued investment in transport infrastructure and mobility services, including roads and rail, public transport, walking and cycling, as well as digital and climate-friendly technologies.
The State Transport Model Baden-Württemberg (LVM-BW) is a digital, data-based model of passenger and freight transport across the state. It can be used to develop and compare different scenarios and to analyse how travel demand and traffic flows may change in the future across all modes of transport – by car, bicycle, public transport and on foot.
To represent transport demand and traffic flows as realistically as possible, the model combines a wide range of data sources. These include traffic counts, household surveys such as “Mobility in Germany” (MiD), timetables, road and cycle network data, and population and employment data.
THE LVM-BW SUPPORTS STRATEGIC TRANSPORT PLANNING AND FURTHER ANALYSES
The LVM-BW can be used to develop and assess different transport scenarios for specific planning and policy questions. This includes, for example, model scenarios supporting Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) in Baden-Württemberg. Further scenarios can be developed to assess the impacts of different measures on travel demand and traffic flows.
In addition, data and model outputs from the LVM-BW can provide a basis for more detailed analyses of innovative mobility and traffic management concepts. Depending on the specific use case, these can be used as input for other modelling approaches, such as microscopic traffic simulations.
