GERMANY COMMISSIONS PILOT SITE FOR ADVANCED TRUCK WEIGHT CONTROL

Germany has taken a major step toward smarter, safer, and more sustainable road infrastructure: the pilot site for enhanced truck weight monitoring at the BAB 4 (Autobahn) near the Rur-Scholle parking area between Aachen and Cologne has officially been commissioned.

The pilot site upgrades an existing axle‑measurement point with additional high‑precision hardware. This enhancement improves measurement accuracy and provides more reliable data on truck weight distributions within the highway network.

TK I – WIM SYSTEM FOR PRE-SELECTION

  • Inductive loops and axle load sensors embedded in the road surface
  • Traffic data acquisition (vehicle class, number of vehicles, and speed)
  • Recording of total load and axle loads during passage in free-flowing traffic
  • ANPR camera for registration plate recognition

TK II – SAFE DIVERTING

  • Use of stationary control signage and diversion technology at the roadside
  • Suspect cases (axle load, total load) visualized in the user interface
  • Targeted diversion for reweighing by displaying the vehicle’s registration number on LED displays
  • Underground scale – combined bridge and axle load scale
  • Two weighing modes:
  • Non-automatic static
  • Automatic dynamic (after completion of type testing)
  • Truck parking spaces for checks (hazard prevention measures, recording of vehicle inspections)
