C-ITS Integration for Safer and Smarter Motorways

C-ITS systems stand for safe and intelligent mobility, which is achieved by connecting vehicles and infrastructure. Traffic obstacles such as road works can be noticed more quickly, and dangers can be reduced. This is achieved through socalled V2X communication, i.e. the direct, interoperable and secure exchange of information between vehicles, roadside infrastructure and traffic control centres.

As soon as a vehicle, equipped with C-ITS, approaches an Autobahn fleet vehicle, the driver is informed about it (warn sign) before it comes into view and can adapt his driving behaviour accordingly. After the successful roll-out of the road works warning trailer (co-funded in the frame of the CEF2 project MERIDIAN) the Autobahn will equip its infrastructure and fleet of maintenance vehicles with C-ITS (service Maintenance Vehicle Warning – MVW). VERKKO will include the procurement and the installation of C-ITS units on the infrastructure and vehicles as well as the basic prerequisite for their successful operation, i.e. the connection and operation of a Public-Key-Infrastructure (PKI) to achieve the C-
ITS security objectives of confidentiality and integrity.

KPIs: It is planned to equip at least 500 fleet vehicles and approx. 20 VMS with C-ITS units.
