Digital upgrade of traffic light systems in Cologne
This Task will focus on increasing the coverage of C-ITS services with a view to safe, efficient and networked use of the road infrastructure. The first goal is to prioritise public transport and blue light organisations at signalised intersections. The digitalisation of traffic lights will enable the use of traffic light data to facilitate the development of additional CITS services. With a total budget of around 53 million euro, the city of Cologne will convert 235 signalised intersections to digital technology over the next few years.
In VERKKO, at least 36 signalised intersections on selected corridors with significant traffic importance are to be digitised by 2028. Implementation in corridors enables the gradual use of the new technology for C-ITS services with significant traffic benefits. This Task will include the digitisation and partial modernisation of the roadside traffic light infrastructure, the closing of the gaps in the existing fibre optic broadband network for the distribution of C-ITS messages, the interface of the traffic lights to road user devices and the traffic system computer to which all traffic lights are connected.
Relevant data will be published in the NAP. The EU-wide harmonised C-ITS specifications and profiles of the C-Roads Platform and DATEX II will be consistently implemented.
KPIs: At least 36 Traffic Light Systems will be renewed and upgraded with C-ITS components. They will be implemented in several road networks like Höninger Weg, Zülpicher Straße, Neusser Straße and Universitätsstraße.
Type of implementation: upgrade / replacement of existing installations.
