Smart Road Programme: Pioneering V2I and V2X Communication

MSMT is developing a strategic "Smart Road" programme to establish a secure and interconnected road system for both users and vehicles by effectively managing traffic data. This programme will deploy RSUs for communication between the vehicle and the infrastructure (V2I-V2X), supported by ANPR and AID cameras for traffic control on the Ring Road of Milan. RSUs will supply information such as real-time average speed, speed at detection points, and actual travel time. Additionally, the system will provide real-time updates on queue lengths, suggest optimal routes, estimate travel times for specific segments based on current traffic data, issue alerts for traffic disruptions, and monitor the number of vehicles in specific areas using AID cameras and V2I communication.

In the frame of the Smart Road programme, this Task will be dedicated to the installation of RSUs, ANPR and AID on the A50 motorway (part of TEN-T Core Network) as well as of a new central server to manage C-ITS information supplied by RSUs along the network.

KPIs: Up to 38 RSUs installed on A50 ring road, and up to 147 cameras (AID and ANPR) installed on the interchanges and service areas of the A50 ring road. 1 server will be deployed.

Type of implementation: New installation that integrates with the existing equipment of cameras and RSUs.
