Deployment of Traffic Queue Warning System for Enhanced Safety
This Task aims to implement a Traffic Queue Warning System on the road network, monitoring traffic, enhancing safety, and optimising infrastructure capacity using ITS. The Task will involve real-world testing of ITS solutions, providing real-time traffic queue alerts through DATEX II for efficient communication between the Cyprus road authority, service providers, and data users. New communication infrastructure, such as variable message signs (VMS), Bluetooth reader devices, CCTV, and traffic detection units, will be deployed on the Cyprus roads, and adaptive messages will be delivered to improve traffic flow and safety. This Task will also address technical and regulatory challenges, supporting the Cyprus Traffic Circulation Plan and optimising high-priority routes, including multimodal transportation.
This Task will support the Cyprus Control Room operation for 3 years, testing traffic regulation plans, monitoring realtime data, and improving traffic management. Public awareness campaigns and feedback from stakeholders and endusers will refine the system, while data exchange standards and cybersecurity measures ensure data security and European compliance.
KPIs: Around 75 % of installed digital and traffic monitoring infrastructure units in the Nicosia District integrated and operational within the Traffic Queue Warning System, means:
- around 4 motorway VMS
- around 5 urban–suburban VMSs
- around 58 CCTV cameras with video analytics
- around 56 traffic detection units (induction loop counters)
- around 32 Bluetooth readers
Around 100% of dynamic traffic data flow compliant within the Traffic Queue Warning System conforming to the DATEX II standard to enable compliance with related legislations and integration with the NAP of Cyprus.
Type of implementation: Upgrade of existing systems (VMSs, CCTV, TDU, BR) and an addition to existing systems (Traffic Queue Warning System).
