Integrated VMS for Improved Traffic Flow and Safety
Autobahn GmbH will implement VMS on predefined, strategic and critical German motorways of the TEN-T network (Scandinavian-Mediterranean, North Sea-Baltic, and Rhine-Danube). The planned dynamic traffic management systems include Dynamic Lane Management, Variable Speed Limits, HGV Overtaking Ban and Incident Management (congestion warning, weather alert, broken down vehicle warning etc.). Outside peak time, the HGV overtaking ban which had been unlimited beforehand, is abolished whenever possible. Variable speed limits will be considered depending on the local infrastructure. The dynamic re-routing system will avoid congestion, traffic collapse and the spreading of traffic into the road network of lower relevance in case of an incident. The implementation will include (but not limited to) a VMS between the individual systems of the port of Hamburg and the highways in the South of Hamburg incl. the renewal of the network control system in the Hamburg metropolitan region and the deployment of a control strategy for cross-border traffic flow optimisation to Denmark; the implementation of a VMS in the area of the Wesertunnel Bremen to coordinate the traffic flow towards the tunnel; the renewal of the VMS on the motorway intersection A6/A9 (Nuremberg-East) with a major impact on the north-south and east-west traffic flow.
KPIs: Commissioning of 90% of the VMS by the end of the VERKKO project.
