Smart Roads in the Mountains (SRIM): Innovative Traffic and Decarbonisation Solutions for Trentino

This Task focuses on making Trentino's roads smarter through the following six key activities to improve transport safety, efficiency, and sustainability:

1) The development of a centralised platform for collecting and exchanging traffic information from stakeholders in Trentino and neighbouring provinces. This platform will create a unified database for analysis and information sharing with the National Access Point (NAP).

2) The upgrade of the existing Variable Message Signs (VMS) network, allowing for more flexible message displays.

3) The installation of Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) system and sensors to assess freight traffic weight, which will aid in planning maintenance on roads and bridges.

4) The upgrading of road monitoring stations for ADR vehicles tracking, enabling better traffic management on narrow roads with obstacles.

5) The installation of weather stations and software to optimise salt spreading, and thus saving costs and protecting the environment.

6) The development of innovative, low-energy solutions for conducting traffic surveys at critical locations, with systems designed to operate for at least two weeks without technician intervention.

KPIs:

1) Data System Interface: creation of the communication gateway and exchange of data at least with one Trentino stakeholder (e.g. the municipality of Trento).

2) VMS network enhancement: deployment of at least 5 eVMS able to communicate with the province’s system.

3) Weigh in-Motion: implementation and validation of at least 1 station for permanent operation use.

4) ADR racking: creation of a map with routes travelled most frequently by ADR vehicles.

5) Slightly Salted Road System: deployment of at least 5 monitoring stations to evaluate the actual need for salt to be spread on the road.

6) Temporary Traffic surveys: deployment of a system able to continuously operate for 2 weeks without human intervention and power from the grid.

Type of implementation: Completely new: Data System Interface, Weigh in-motion, Slightly Salted Road System. Upgrade of existing systems: VMS network enhancement. Addition to existing systems: ADR tracking. Replacement of past implementations: temporary traffic-surveys.
