Improving Road Safety with Weigh-in-Motion systems

This Task will be dedicated to the deployment of Weigh-in-Motion systems on the Latvian TEN-T network to monitor the weight of freight transport and to protect the road infrastructure of international importance from accelerated deterioration, leading to increased CO2 emissions and higher risks to traffic safety.

The WIM system also provides data on traffic volume, vehicle type and other useful transport information that will be fed to the NAP database, the freight and heavy goods transport permit database, as well as to the databases of the authorities responsible for the weight control of goods vehicles. In this Task, the WIM system will be also integrated in into Latvian State Roads Authority (LVC) internal systems.

Data extraction and integration will make it possible to reduce the environmental impact of transport, for example by facilitating the efficient distribution of freight transport or optimising the routing of trucks to reduce emissions.

KPIs: Up to 10 new WIM systems fully deployed for permanent operational use (precise number and localization to be determined during feasibility study). Systems will be primarily located near border crossings to monitor freight entering and leaving Latvia.

Type of implementation: Completely new implementation.
