Innovative cycling information monitoring in Berlin

In 2023 and 2024, the “Innovative cycling information monitoring for optimal cycling infrastructure for Berlin” project has successfully established the DB Rad+ app and the Visio tool in Berlin. The aim of such project was to promote cycling, support the transition to active mobility, and improve urban air quality. The DB Rad+ app incentivises cycling by rewarding users for recording kilometres cycled, with the data visualised and anonymised for planning better cycling infrastructure. This approach replaces selective data collection with comprehensive, real-time data across Berlin, benefiting the environment and enhancing data quality, which are then used to define transport infrastructure measures. This Task will be dedicated to further develop the existing app and the Visio tool in order to generate data that can be used for cycling traffic planning and .to partially replace complex and expensive manual traffic counts in the future.

For example, the Task will include the supplement of other display options (district-related representation, individual street sections, etc.) and of other analysis methods (e.g., turning relationships, stop length at intersections), which were mentioned in the interviews with users of the Visio tool in the Senate administration and in the districts. This Task will include purchasing of bicycle data from mobility service providers for traffic planning. The data will continue to be freely available on the Digital Platform for City Transport and the Open Data Portal Berlin. In addition, the data will be used and further processed with in the Berlin administration and in research projects beyond the scope of VERKKO. The deployment of the GLOSA (Green Light Optimised Speed Advisory) service for cyclists on highly used roads will be assessed. Finally, this Task will use data collected to further develop smart cycling measures.

KPIs: The cycling information will be available for all roads in Berlin and in the interconnected area to Brandenburg (provided that there are enough routes at each road segment).
