ADVANCED TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT CAPACITIES FOR THE AUTOBAHN NETWORK IN THE SOUTHWEST OF GERMANY

The german Autobahn GmbH laid the foundation for the new traffic center in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart – supported by VERKKO. The new traffic control center (TCC) will have state-of-the-art software and hardware solutions towards digital infrastructure and digital road operator including the latest developements for C-ITS applications.

The new TCC building in Ludwigsburg will replace a smaller one in Stuttgart and will offer space for a new control center with 8-10 modern workplaces, server-technology and offices.

The German Autobahn GmbH is responsible for the planning, construction, operation, maintenance and traffic management of motorways and trunk roads in Germany. Managing 13,000 kilometres of motorway, the company is one of the largest infrastructure operators in Germany. With nine traffic management centers all over Germany it is one of the pioneers in the implementation of C-ITS and intelligent traffic management.

Freight transport in particular will continue to increase in the next few years. To ensure the safety and ease of traffic, an efficient, modern TCCs are essential. New tasks will arise for the TCCs with increasing digitalization, e.g. C-ITS.

Measurable benefits of the new TCC include the number and length of traffic control systems operated by the TCC as well as the number of tunnels which are supervised 24/7 by TCC operators.
