THE MANAGEMENT OF THE 1520 M LONG ROAD TUNNEL LEADING TO VUOSAARI HARBOUR IN HELSINKI NEEDS TO BE UPDATED TO ENSURE TUNNEL SAFETY IN THE EVOLVING OPERATING ENVIRONMENT.
This VERKKO-Task will focus on the upgrade of traffic management and control combined with minor structural changes required for the upgrade. The aim is to maintain the tunnel management system so that it will continue to meet the requirements set in the EU Tunnel Directive 2004/54/EC in the future.
Vuosaari Harbour is Finland’s leading cargo port by value of goods, and approximately half of Finland’s cargo tonnage passes through the port.
While the connection including the tunnel is not itself part of the TEN-T network, it connects the port of Helsinki, which is part of the core maritime network, to the Motorway E18, part of the Scandinavian-
Mediterranean corridor, thus ensuring the integration of the core network services for future digital traveller and freight services.
- The length of the Vuosaari tunnel is 1.5 km
- Distance to E18 about 3 km
- Distance to Helsinki port 0.5 km
- Total length of the section including the tunnel is about 5 km.
THE ROAD TUNNEL RENOVATION FROM 2025 TO 2026 LEADING TO VUOSAARI HARBOUR IN HELSINKI IMPROVES INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS AND AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE.
The extensive renovation of the tunnel structure and road includes the upgrading of all technical systems in the tunnel.
This includes fire alarms, smoke extraction, ventilation and alarm systems, lighting, cameras, and traffic management systems. The tunnel structures will be repaired and the drainage and fire-extinguishing water systems under the tunnel will be replaced. The project also includes improving the tunnel’s alternative route, which will serve as a primary detour and may also be used by special transport vehicles.
